Renovation & addition architects in Toronto

Grow your home without losing its character

We design renovations and additions for Toronto homeowners and developers — working with the existing structure, not against it, to bring in light and space that fits how you live.

Renovations & additions

What a renovation or addition involves

Every project starts with the house you have — its structure, its light, its history.

We work on renovations and additions across Toronto, from small additions to full home renovations, for homeowners and developers alike.

Every project begins with understanding how the existing structure holds together — its load paths, its bones — before we open it up for more light and space, with interior architecture considered alongside the structural work.

  • Renovations and additions, one practice
  • Interior architecture considered together
  • Natural light and honest materials throughout
  • Close attention to how you live day to day

How we work

From first visit to finished room

A renovation or addition moves through clear stages, each building on the last.

  1. Step 1

    Initial consultation

We visit your home, walk the existing structure and talk through what you need — more space, more light, a better layout — and what the building allows.

  2. Step 2

    Concept design

We develop a design that works with the existing structure, testing how new and old rooms connect, where light enters, and how the addition sits on the street.

Approve the concept before we move to drawings

  3. Step 3

    Permit drawings

We prepare the drawings needed for permit and for tender, detailing materials, structural work, and exactly how the new addition ties into the existing house and foundation.

  4. Step 4

    Construction support

We review shop drawings, answer questions from the site, and visit during construction, so the finished work matches both the drawings and the intent behind them.

Questions

Renovation & addition questions

What Toronto homeowners and developers ask before starting a renovation or addition.

Have a renovation in mind?

Tell us about your house and what you need from it.

Do you work with existing structures or design from scratch?

Both. For renovations and additions we start with the existing structure — its layout, its light, its construction — and design around what it allows and what it needs to change.

Do you design for developers as well as homeowners?

Yes. We work with homeowners on single-family renovations and additions, and with developers on small-scale residential projects across Toronto.

Will the addition look like it belongs to the original house?

That is the intent of every addition we design — new rooms that extend the house rather than compete with it, through material, proportion and light.

Are you licensed to practise architecture in Ontario?

Yes. Atelier North Architects is licensed by the Ontario Association of Architects.

Do you handle interior architecture as part of a renovation?

Yes. Interior architecture is considered alongside the renovation or addition, so the inside of the house is designed with the same attention as the structure.
